Good will to all men?

I really wanted to write a nice end of year message a cheerful inspirational blog about how great the year has been and how next year is bound to be better..

But then I took a look around me and wondered if it was even worth trying because although there are some really great people out there like the lady in my home town who last night gave away ….yes GAVE away 6 Christmas bags of goodies to people who couldn’t make ends meet. I’ve seen the articles about secret Santa’s and people donating coats to those who don’t have a decent warm coat but they are just a few in a world filled with horrible hate filled little shits.

Even when you try to do something nice it can be ruined by greed and hate as it turns out that some charity Christmas cards are being produced by slave prison labour in China, I bet they don’t put that in the little letters on the back *at least 10% of the cost of this card goes to charity* (oh and it was cheap because we forced the prison slaves to print them)…

There are individuals in this world who just want to make life miserable for other people.

Just because someone doesn’t look like them, or talk like them or have the same faith as them it doesn’t make those people bad. Nothing gives anyone the right to make another human being feel awful, to humiliate or hurt them, to say hateful things or incite violence .

Its starts small, it starts with a lack of discipline, a me me me attitude breaking little rules to see if they can get away with it, and when they do that rush pushes them on, trying something bigger. First it’s a slogan painted on a wall in the dead of night, then a brick thrown at a window, a push in a crowd or a jeer shouted from a car as they drive past, but its gets bigger and it gets worse until the bullies feel brave enough to act in public, in the open, in daylight. Spewing their hate and bile onto their innocent victim.

Nothing gives anyone that right and yet somehow people who feel that way seem to be in a majority right now. I don’t just mean the yobs walking the streets with their gang tattoo’s chanting the slogans of the brainwashed and braindead.. I’m talking about leaders, people who have influence, people who make promises to thousands or millions and then allow their own personal hate to take over and they use their power to eradicate or displace whole groups of people for nothing more than the way the look , speak or pray. These are the people doing the brainwashing, they are the ones fuelling the hate and directing it for their own gain. They provide the braindead with a common scapegoat to detract from their own failings and by the looks of things they are succeeding.

These leaders would promise their people heaven itself in order to get to the position they want and then forget all the promises they made and leave the people they pretend to represent to suffer. No matter where you look social care, healthcare, pensions and benefits are being cut while those in power pay privately for healthcare , invest huge sums of money offshore to avoid the taxes they tell everyone else are unavoidable and retire to the lap of luxury while those who have worked in honest and hard jobs suffer.

We have been told all year that our planet is dying and that we the individuals must do all we can to stop the downward spiral before it’s too late. We have been told to give up our plastics give up our cars give up our consumer lifestyle. And when we look for guidance our leaders are jetting off on holidays driving huge cars and enjoying life to the full while our lives and homes fall down round our ears.

Not that we are innocent , after a year of being environmentally friendly we have decided it’s as its New year all bets are off and we are going to happily poison what little clean air and unspoilt water we have by shoving tons of heavy metals into the air in the form of fireworks.

What is wrong with us? Have we lost the ability to reason or are we just too tired to care? Do we not understand the poor , the displaced, the homeless, the sick, did not deserve this , they didn’t ask for these things to happen to them but twists of fate and cruel circumstance often compounded on each other until they could no longer save themselves.

The most apt Christmas films this year have to be A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist, written over 150 years ago they tell the tale of the rich lording it over the poor, of them being impervious to their suffering.

In both stories there is of course an ending that sees a twist of fate, a pang of conscience that changes the rich person, but somehow I do not think that our leaders will be visited by any Christmas ghosts this year and far too many families will be broke and homeless, too many children will be left asking ‘please may I have some more’

So forget about that New year’s resolution to lose weight, stop smoking, walk more, swear less or go to church more often…

If there is one thing you resolve to do for 2020 let it be ….to be more kind.

Because, there but for the grace of God….
